How to Measure Vertical Leap

It is important to measure your vertical leap, so you can track your progression. There are a number of ways you can go about measuring vertical leap. The most commonly used method can be broken down into a few simple steps:

  1. Standing with your side next to a wall, reach up & touch as high as you can on the wall. (do not go onto your toes though)
  2. Mark the spot the top of your hand reached (either with chalk, tape, or easiest way...saliva)
  3. Standing in the same spot, now jump up as high as you can and once again with your hand make a second marking at the top of your jump.
  4. Measure the distance between the two markings & this is your vertical leap

Remember your vertical leap WILL FLUCTUATE!

Especially when your specifically in training for vert. The best practice I've found, is to always measure your vertical leap on the same day, and at the same time during the week. For example, I'd always measure my vertical on a sunday, after my plyos session.

Don't get too discouraged if your vertical actually goes down one week. Our bodies take time to recover, and there's alot of things which can effect our vertical. I suggest stick to measuring it once a week. It takes time for your vert to go up. Over a long period of time, you'll hopefully see yourself steadily jump higher and higher from month to month.

There are a few other ways you can go about measuring your vertical leap. To the right is a vert increase chart, which is used much like the above process. The chart is put at the bottom of your standing reach, or just remember the inch mark that your reach came up too. Then once again just jump up, and instead of using a tape measure to work out your vertical leap, the inch markings are already on the chart, and you can easily track your progression.

Many athletic & sporting teams purchase what is known as a Jump-It. Although these can be better than jumping up against a wall, they can be very over priced. They work by, instead of having to make a mark in the air, you hit a series of little metal bars. The bars swivel around, and the last bar swiveled around, from the ground up is how high you touched.
